Cosmetic & Orthodontic Dentistry

Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry is generally used to refer to any dental work that improves the appearance of a person’s teeth, gums and/or smile.

At Banff Dental Care we offer three types of non-invasive treatments for a beautiful smile:

Teeth Whitening

We offer both ‘Chairside Whitening’ and ‘Take-home Whitening’ treatments.  Chairside Whitening is a comfortable, gentle way to whiten without complicated procedures or harmful UV rays.  It’s done in a 90 minute session in our office and is the fastest option for a whiter, brighter smile.

As an extra service offered to our patients who have the Chairside Whitening treatment, you can join our ‘Whitening for Life’ program.  With this program you will receive a customized tray and FREE whitening gel refills for maintaining your regular hygiene visits.  Our existing patients who have already received the Chairside Whitening treatment are also eligible to join our ‘Whitening for Life’ Program.

The Take-Home Whitening treatment is an easy-to-use at home, peroxide-based whitening method.  After your initial consultation, we will take impressions of your teeth to make soft, customized trays for you.  You’ll then wear the whitening gel and trays for 3 minutes a day at your own convenience.

Snap-On-Smile

Dr. Steven Martin is proud to offer the Snap-On-Smilesmile improvement technique.  It’s an appliance that is an affordable alternative to permanent cosmetic dental work that has helped many of our patients achieve a wonderful smile.

Snap-On-Smile is a custom-fitted appliance that you slip over your teeth to hide cracks, chips, overlapping teeth, missing teeth, and stains. Made with specialized resin, the appliance is very thin yet uncompromising in its strength. There are nineteen colour shades and eighteen different smile designs from which to choose, providing you with an ample array of smile fashion.

This is how we make your Snap-On-Smile:

  • We take an upper and lower impression of your teeth.
  • In consultation with you, we select your preferred shape and shade.  Digital imaging is then used so that you can see what your smile transformation will look like.
  • Your impression along with your applicable dental information is then sent to the lab for fabrication.
  • Finally, within two weeks your Snap-On-Smile is ready!

In most cases, there are no shots, drilling, or cement, and your new smile is reversible.

Lumineers Veneers

Lumineers Veneers has revolutionized the way modern dentists beautify your smile. Unlike traditional porcelain veneers, Lumineers are as thin as a contact lens. Made exclusively from porcelain, these extremely durable, ultra-thin veneers have been clinically proven to last more than 20 years.

With traditional veneers, teeth are ground down to make a rough surface on which restorations are bonded. However, because Lumineers are ultra-thin so they can be applied seamlessly over your existing teeth, so that no healthy tooth structure is lost and the procedure is reversible.

Lumineers are as beautiful as they are strong and long lasting and after consultation, the entire procedure requires only two visits. First, we take a precision mold of your dentition. Then, the mold is delivered to the Cerinate Smile Design Studio where your Lumineers are beautifully crafted especially for you. On your second visit, after checking for perfect fit, your beautiful new smile is applied and bonded with a curing light.

Orthodontic Dentistry

Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that corrects teeth and jaws that are positioned improperly.  Orthodontic dentistry uses braces or other appliances to put gentle pressure on your teeth and eventually move them into the right position.

Invisalign

At Banff Dental Care we prefer to use the virtually invisible solution to straightening teeth: Invisalign, also known as the ‘invisible braces’.

By using a series of clear, removable aligners, Invisalign straightens your teeth little by little.  You need to visit our office approximately every two weeks to change your aligners and the average treatment time is around one year.

In addition to the obvious advantage over traditional braces (they are virtually invisible), the Invisalign aligners are also removable.  This means that they are able to be removed while eating, brushing and flossing.  This ensures your proper oral health can be maintained during straightening as food does not get caught.

Neuromuscular TMJ Therapy

What is TMJ?

TMJ (temporomandibular joint syndrome), also referred to as TMD (temporomandibular joint disorder) is a chronic degenerative disease that often takes years to develop.

People who suffer from TMJ have an imbalance in the jaw-to-skull relationship, which is caused by a bad bite (malocclusion). When the teeth are misaligned, they cannot provide the support the muscles in the face need for chewing and swallowing. These muscles are then forced into a strained position, resulting in pain throughout the face, head, arms, shoulders, and back.  Although a person may have beautiful teeth or had orthodontics to line the teeth up for aesthetic reasons, the muscles and joints may not be comfortable.

Symptoms of TMJ include:

  • Headaches / Migraines
  • Facial Pain
  • Neck and Shoulder Pain
  • Tinnitus (Ringing In The Ears)
  • Unexplained Loose Teeth
  • Sensitive and Sore Teeth
  • Jaw Pain
  • Limited Jaw Movement or Locking Jaw
  • Numbness or Tingling in the Fingers, Hands and Arms
  • Worn or Cracked Teeth
  • Clicking or Popping Jaw Joints
  • Depression

How Can TMJ Be Treated

Neuromuscular Therapy serves to correct the bite and realign the jaw, relieving the symptoms associated with TMJ.  Most TMJ patients suffer from jaw joint compression problems (damage to the disc and surrounding joint tissues).

After examination and diagnosis, Dr Martin will develop a customized TMJ appliance to help decompress the joint area to allow healing.  Once we are able to reposition the jaw into a ‘healing’ position, the pain associated with TMJ will start to reduce.

Depending on severity of the case, additional treatments may be required.  In certain cases, Dr Martin will also coordinate treatments with other specialists, such as chiropractors, physiotherapists and orthodontists.
